Two upcoming changes shift how funders approach data management planning. Data Management and Sharing Plans (DMSPs) are becoming structured inputs that can be more easily reviewed, compared, and tracked over the course of a project.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) will require an updated format for DMSPs effective May 25, 2026 (NOT-OD-26-046). While the underlying 2023 NIH Data Management and Sharing Policy remains unchanged, this new format reflects NIH’s effort to improve consistency in how plans are written, reviewed, and monitored.

Additionally, the National Science Foundation (NSF) announced that starting on April 27, 2026 their DMSPs will be required to be completed as a form on Research.gov rather than uploaded as a separate document.

Understanding these updates now will help ensure a smoother transition and stronger proposals. While questions remain as the agencies roll out their new formats, this news article outlines key implications based on what we know so far. We will continue to share updates as more details become available. Additionally, we will be updating all our Data Management and Sharing Plan guidance and templates in the next month. Stay tuned!
